Ahead of Ghana’s 69th Independence Day celebration on March 6, 2026, the Old Tafo Municipal Assembly has organized a sanitation exercise within the Asuafam Electoral Area to promote environmental cleanliness in preparation for the national event. The exercise forms part of efforts to ensure communities remain clean and healthy before the Independence Day anniversary. Speaking during the exercise, the Municipal Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mr. Mohammed Musah, emphasized the importance of sanitation in national development. He noted that both the Bible and the Quran teach that “cleanliness is next to godliness,” and therefore urged residents to take collective responsibility in maintaining a clean environment.

Mr. Musah also cautioned residents to be mindful of faulty electrical wires, gas leakages, and damaged cables, which pose serious risks to lives and property. According to him, NADMO has developed disaster maps identifying flood-prone areas as well as domestic and commercial fire risk zones within the municipality. He therefore encouraged citizens to remain vigilant and take preventive measures in their respective communities. He further advised residents to actively participate in the monthly communal clean-up exercises held on the first Saturday of every month to help prevent disease outbreaks and ensure a healthy environment. Mr. Musah expressed concern over low community participation during such exercises. He noted that one of the major challenges faced by the Assembly is the lack of support from residents, which often compels the Assembly to rely heavily on its staff and private institutions such as Ashanti Youth for Sanitation to assist in cleaning activities.

Also speaking at the event, the Assemblyman for the Asuafam Electoral Area, Honorable Kwame Antwi, described the initiative as commendable and beneficial to the community. He applauded the Municipal Chief Executive, Honorable Abubakar Sidiq, the Municipal Director, and the Assembly staff for their commitment to promoting sanitation in the area. Honorable Antwi appealed to residents to fully participate in future clean-up exercises to make the work easier and more effective. He also urged the public to desist from dumping refuse into gutters, noting that choked drains contribute to flooding and the outbreak of diseases within the community.

The sanitation exercise saw the clearing of gutters, sweeping of streets, and collection of refuse as part of efforts to improve environmental conditions in the municipality.
