OLD TAFO MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY SUPPORTS PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES
The Old Tafo Municipal Assembly has held its second support program for Persons with Disabilities, providing beneficiaries with essential items and resources to support their businesses and other income-generating activities. The program, held on August 19, 2026, at the forecourt of the Assembly, was organized by the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development in collaboration with the Disability Fund Management Committee. Speaking at the program, the Head of the Social Welfare Department, Madam Anita Donkor, said the initiative forms part of the Assembly’s continued efforts to improve the social-economic well-being of Persons with Disabilities. She explained that the support goes beyond providing immediate assistance, stressing that it is intended to create opportunities for beneficiaries to engage in sustainable economic activities, improve their livelihoods and become more self-reliant.
The Municipal Chief Executive, Honorable Abubakar Sadiq, commended the initiative and reaffirmed government’s commitment to promoting disability inclusion and economic empowerment. According to him, Persons with Disabilities should not be regarded merely as beneficiaries of social interventions, but as citizens with valuable skills, ideas, ambitions and aspirations capable of contributing significantly to the development of their families and communities. Honorable Abubakar Sadiq disclosed that the allocation for Persons with Disabilities under the District Assemblies Common Fund had been increased from three percent to five percent. He said the increase would provide additional resources to support sustainable livelihood program and enhance the participation of Persons with Disabilities in local development.
The MCE therefore urged beneficiaries to use the items and resources provided responsibly by investing in productive ventures that could generate sustainable income. He encouraged them to take advantage of the intervention to strengthen their livelihoods, support their families and reduce their dependence on social assistance. The beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the government and the Old Tafo Municipal Assembly for the intervention, saying the support would help improve their businesses, livelihoods and ability to provide for their families. The Assembly says it remains committed to promoting an inclusive community where Persons with Disabilities are empowered to achieve economic independence and contribute meaningfully to the development of the municipality.
